Ok,so by now I'm used to seeing weird stuff in China but what I witnessed the other day was beyond anything I have seen so far. I'm getting out of the metro to suddenly come face to face with a half-naked man, knife in hand, slaughtering a sheep!Right there on the pavement!

This is just a quick note about the random things that happened to me today.
First, on the bus to the city centre, I had the questionable pleasure of sitting next to a man, who could not stop himself from SPITTING!Inside the bus!Needless to say, I felt an enormous urge to open the window next to me, despite it being quite cold outside in order to avoid being sick. Can that kind of behaviour be ever explained as cultural differences/background? Secondly, I was having a blond-moment (not proud of it) when I tried to use the ticket machine at the metro as I forgot to bring my travel card. Quite stupidly, I kept trying to insert a 1 yuan note into the machine, which (unknown to me at the time) did not accept that particular note! After several failed attempts, and feeling completely puzzled as to why my money is not accepted by the 'stupid' machine, two local girls took pity on me and with their broken English explained where I was going wrong. Not only that, they offered me the correct fare! I'm sure China is full of wonderful, kind people, I just wish I met them more often. Just another day in China. Singapore is notoriously reported as one of the most (if not THE most) expensive cities in the world. It probably is if you live there. Or if you intend to stay at the spectacular Marina Bay Sands hotel and enjoy a spot of luxurious shopping. If, however, your main point of visiting Singapore is too explore it during a short break, believe me, you do not need a large overdraft or a second mortgage.
I should have started my holiday story from Shenzhen rather than Singapore as, even though it is within China and very close to 'home', it was still a trip away.
My OH has friends in this rapidly developing city, which over the last 50 years has undergone a truly unbelievable transformation from a sleepy finishing village to a major urban destination. Taking advantage of the extra days off, we decided to visit them and make the most of the pre-holiday, quiet days in Shenzhen. |
