Ok,so by now I'm used to seeing weird stuff in China but what I witnessed the other day was beyond anything I have seen so far. I'm getting out of the metro to suddenly come face to face with a half-naked man, knife in hand, slaughtering a sheep!Right there on the pavement!
This is just a quick note about the random things that happened to me today.
First, on the bus to the city centre, I had the questionable pleasure of sitting next to a man, who could not stop himself from SPITTING!Inside the bus!Needless to say, I felt an enormous urge to open the window next to me, despite it being quite cold outside in order to avoid being sick. Can that kind of behaviour be ever explained as cultural differences/background? Secondly, I was having a blond-moment (not proud of it) when I tried to use the ticket machine at the metro as I forgot to bring my travel card. Quite stupidly, I kept trying to insert a 1 yuan note into the machine, which (unknown to me at the time) did not accept that particular note! After several failed attempts, and feeling completely puzzled as to why my money is not accepted by the 'stupid' machine, two local girls took pity on me and with their broken English explained where I was going wrong. Not only that, they offered me the correct fare! I'm sure China is full of wonderful, kind people, I just wish I met them more often. Just another day in China. Singapore is notoriously reported as one of the most (if not THE most) expensive cities in the world. It probably is if you live there. Or if you intend to stay at the spectacular Marina Bay Sands hotel and enjoy a spot of luxurious shopping. If, however, your main point of visiting Singapore is too explore it during a short break, believe me, you do not need a large overdraft or a second mortgage.
I should have started my holiday story from Shenzhen rather than Singapore as, even though it is within China and very close to 'home', it was still a trip away.
My OH has friends in this rapidly developing city, which over the last 50 years has undergone a truly unbelievable transformation from a sleepy finishing village to a major urban destination. Taking advantage of the extra days off, we decided to visit them and make the most of the pre-holiday, quiet days in Shenzhen. A few days ago I returned from a well-deserved holiday:)Last year I spent two weeks in my OH's hometown celebrating the Chinese New Year with his(very big)family. It was a nice gathering, different generations catching up with each other, enjoying the home-made food(and LOTS of it). The main activity though, and by that I mean everyone was doing it EVERY SINGLE DAY for hours on end, was playing 'mah-jiang'(that's how they pronounce it).
Whilst searching for information on renting a bike in Guangzhou(I didn't have a clue that there is something called the GZ Greenway with hundreds of kilometres of bike routes around the city and beyond! How could that have escaped me?)I stumbled upon an interesting travel website AFAR. I have never even heard of it but that could be because it is a website of a US travel magazine(as far as I can tell)and I'm not that familiar with the travel market over there. Anyway, they have a huge section on different places in China(and every other place on Earth you can think of)so go ahead and check it out(gosh, that really sounded as if I getting paid to advertise it-I wish!).
Here is what I found on AFAR with regards to cycling in GZ. Hi everyone!
I was away the last couple of weeks thus the lack of any posts but in the next few days I'll definitely update you on my recent travels and boy, where they exciting:)!I took lots of photos too so you'll be able to check them out in my gallery.x I feel so lucky to live in Guangzhou, an interesting city in itself, in close proximity to bustling Hong Kong, with lots of convenient transport links to other locations in China as well as further afield. Within a two-hour train journey from GZ you can find yourself walking around a special and unique place...MACAU
